Chicago's south side after the Columbian Exposition of 1892 was certainly one of the most beautiful communities in all the world. In addition to that it was among the first cities to have elevated mass transit that could quickly connect you from any point in the city to another. You wouldn't know that by looking at pictures of it today though. Then and now:
The Kenwood Branch elevated line suspended service in 1954. Today the graffiti marks the wall of where an underpass once was. The surrounding area is now sparsely populated and significantly dilapidated. Few of the historic structures pictured above remain.
Shovel ready project? Rebuild the Kenwood branch elevated. Most of the right-of-way pathway still exists. Okay, enough of my pipedreams
